Interpreting an artwork should be easy for those who live in the same era as the artist, but we often feel insecure, not even knowing where to start.
When we are faced with a painting or sculpture, we can recognize them as artistic works. But how to start a dialogue with sound, installation, video, food or other unconventional media?
With PAPESSE LAB we want to explore together, digging into the folds of reality, to offer a 360-degree view that involves viewers of all ages.
As Galileo said, “it is not enough to look, you have to want to believe what you see”. A work is not only an object, but a source of stimuli for thought and action.
Stay up to date and discover how our laboratory offer will grow over time.
In the first path, Papesse Lab aims to spark curiosity in the viewer in dialogue with the works in the exhibition halls. It will be an overview of the exhibition with a focus on both the works and the installation decisions of the curator and the artist. How do you create an exhibition? Who are the figures who intervene to get to the day of the exhibition? You will find your own personal way of expressing yourself by creating the basis for a lasting relationship with art and the surrounding space.

Have you ever had curiosity to explore the art world, but you were left in doubt because you did not know how to approach this reality? You may have thought: “But I could do this too… and maybe even better!” Starting from an overview of the exhibition, we will get to the criticism and personal reading of the works to gain awareness about the poetics and the project of the author. A fundamental step is to make the visit interactive, to create a dialogue and a comparison between the viewer and the artist. Through a series of open questions, we will investigate the seemingly smoky world of art to emerge more aware and curious.
Who can decree an artist? What does the poetics of the artist mean? What are the keys that allow us to read a work autonomously? During the workshop we will find out how and if you could do it too!

Have you ever wondered if there is contemporary art around you? We will discover it together before entering the designated exhibition spaces. Activating a conscious gaze is the spark for curiosity. Training ourselves to capture stimuli, which we usually ignore, will be our guiding star. Siena has always been a territory of open-air art, but there are also hidden traces. How many will we find? Will they be definable as art? Why should an artist invade public space without leaving any trace linked to their signature? Is authorship in art always declared? Must the work be tangible? During a walk that will begin outside the Palazzo delle Papesse, we will let ourselves be guided by the hidden signs that each of us might catch, like a kind of Dadaist walk, at the end of which we will question what art is and how we can recognize it.

What is public art? What is a monument? What is an installation? A site specific? What will be a relational work? What did Joseph Beuys mean when he said that everyone can be an artist? Usually, the detachment between public and contemporary art is created on school desks, where you almost never have the opportunity to deepen the art of 900, least of all art of our time. We therefore aim to make the distance less clear with visual art. In a course designed for groups of curious and primary and secondary schools of first and second degree, we will spend six hours, divided into three days, with frontal meetings and laboratory, to let the viewer acquire an art world’s vocabulary and autonomy in reading the works. Training the eye to complexity will make a potential future art lover curious.
Path towards the interpretation of works of art, visit at the museum and workshop.
The hours will be divided into 3 different days, in agreement with the school.

What is drawing? What are the contemporary techniques for drawing? Which materials can be used? Can you mark and be considered a designer? Does it make sense to draw in the dark?
Papesse LAB offers a drawing workshop for all those who are curious to open their minds and use their eyes. Can’t draw? Frustration pervades you every time you see a beautiful drawing?
Through his writings, directed to young painters, Leonardo Da Vinci teaches us how to draw even without the need for special manual skills. If you are a designer and curious, go to our laboratory and let yourself be guided by the secrets of genius and come to discover magic with your own eyes.
The course is modular and repeatable
